I’m pretty sure that almost any guard can agree that this is one of the most annoying aspects of our job.

Okay if you do this you split your pay with me, adding it to the contract they agree to when they sign in.

Or when swim team is finished.

Only twice in a shift? I want that pool, one of mine right now I think we change them every two hours:
This morning, put them in for swim team
Mid-morning, divide pools into three for swim lessons & others
Afternoon, divide for lap/open swim
Mid-afternoon, section off area for private party
Late afternoon, resection after party
End of shift re fixing lane-lines.

  • Question: thank you! iv always known i wanted to do something that involves the water. and for along time i thought it was the navy, but then i found your blog and it opened my eyes. i got obsessed with lifeguarding, bought sweatshirts, got my red cross and cpr certifications. i got a job at a local pool. and my first shift is actually next thursday xD haha and i eventually want to live in san diego and be not only a beach guard, but also a first responer diver. :) thank you for my future :) ~josh - oceans-and-boys
  • Answer:

Josh, this message is far more inspiring then my blog will ever be. Thank you.

This is a really great (and pretty accurate) article about Guarding. If you're interested, check it out.

I’ve read this article before and while it does have some valid points others are completely dependent on the lifeguard. Some people are honest, others not, some also have harder work ethics then others.

This article generalizes us all as the same person, and we are not.

Which obviously makes lifeguarding the ideal job to have. *sigh*

Can we stop having them join my lifeguarding classes, I am tired of failing them.

  • Question: would you know offhand if both first aid and CPR need to be recerted every year or if it's just CPR - Anonymous
  • Answer:

Depends on your certification. If you have the old version [for red cross] it is just CPR. Just look on your card(s) if CPR and first aid are on the same one then you need to recert them both every year, if they are on different cards then you need to look at how long the first aid one lasts to see when you need to retake it.

Sorry that’s the best I can do to answer this one without seeing your cards.
